What they said: “The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the ultimate performance S.U.V., delivering a combination of Jeep capability and utility, world-class performance, luxury and refinement, and advanced innovative technology,” said Mike Manley, Jeep’s chief executive.
What they didn’t say: This is a wildly impractical vehicle — a contradiction in terms, for sure, since S.U.V.’s exist supposedly for, well, their utility. But, somewhat surprisingly, this vehicle is so well executed that it is rather compelling, inside and out.
What makes it tick? The optimized 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 has gained 45 horsepower and 45 pound-feet of torque over the previous generation; it now produces 465 horsepower and an equal number of pound-feet of torque. It’ll run from zero to 60 m.p.h. in 4.8 seconds. That’s a bit slower than the outgoing version, but this one has gained about 350 pounds. Fuel efficiency, you ask? Expect mid-teens, when the throttle isn’t being hammered.
How much? How soon? About $45,000 and up, sometime this summer.
How’s it look? Jeep has bestowed this new version with unique exterior and interior touches that give it a really angry persona. The monochrome exterior features a body-colored front grille, wheel flares, rear spoiler and side sill cladding. The lower front grille is closer to the pavement, wider and painted gloss black. The hood has had two snorting air scoops added, like nostrils on a bull, and the rear has sprouted dual exhausts. The whole vehicle has been lowered an inch, and now wears 20-inch wheels and tires.
