Making its debut this week at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show is the 2013 Buick Encore, which hits U.S. showrooms early next year and goes on sale in Europe later this year as the Opel Mokka.
The vehicle is relatively small, stretching less than 170 inches in overall length, but there’s plenty of room inside, according to Buick.
The automaker claims the Encore can seat five adults and offer up to 48.4 cubic feet of storage space with the rear seats folded. This drops to 18.8 cubic feet when the rear seats are in place.
Power comes from a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine rated at 148 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque, and drive is sent to the wheels via a six-speed automatic which features both a steep first gear and tall overdrive gear.
Combined, these two features help with acceleration and overall fuel economy, though final numbers have not yet been released. Buick also hasn't specified whether the Encore will offer all-wheel drive but expect it to be an option, with front-wheel drive remaining standard.

Jeep Wrangler's body-color roof option taking off.
Jeep is expanding the availability of its body-color hard tops on the Wrangler for 2012. The company says that last year, 80 percent of Wrangler Sahara buyers selected the base hard top, while of those, 20 percent went all-in for the body-color option. Next year, Wrangler Rubicon buyers will also be able to get their off-road bruiser dressed to the nines. According to Ward's Auto, the Wrangler recently experienced its best sales month in the history of the model last month, with 14,355 units rolling off of showroom floors.
Roof supplier CSP recently retooled to handle the larger capacity, and as such, the 2012 roof features a few changes compared to those found on the 2011 Wrangler. Those include slightly larger openings at the rear hatch and side glass for more interior light and added finger grips to help with removal. Buyers will also be able to option up their Wranglers with color-matched fender flares for a complete monochrome look. Pretty snappy.

If Land Rover – or for that matter, any automaker that specializes in making vehicles that aren't particularly efficient – has any hopes of meeting strict future standards for fuel mileage and emissions, it's going to have to take some drastic measures.
Sure, hybrids are one potential option that we're sure the automaker is working on, as are more diesels, but these high-tech powertrains are expensive. And, though often overlooked, diesels and hybrids are also heavy, which is one issue Land Rover would have problems with overcoming since its SUVs are already big, bulky and, well... pleasantly plump.
And so it comes as little surprise that the British bred (and Indian owned) automaker has decided to introduce a smaller, friendlier model called the Evoque. But that's just the start of Land Rover's apparent plans. The Detroit Bureau reports that the automaker is planning to shed as much as 1,100 pounds from its 'utes over the next decade using materials like aluminum and carbon fiber in place of conventional steel, without actually altering the size of its vehicle's footprints.
The first sign of Land Rover's far-reaching goals will reportedly be seen in the form of a new Defender concept that's set to debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. We'll be paying close attention to this machine, as the company claims it is designing the next Defender to meet U.S. regulations.

There's a problem with some 2006 and 2007 model year Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX 400h vehicles. Today, Toyota announced that it will voluntarily recall 45,500 Highlander Hybrid and 36,700 Lexus RX 400h vehicles that were sold in the States. What's the problem? Toyota says there is a control board with transistors inside the Intelligent Power Module (IPM) in the Hybrid System Inverter and that, "Certain transistors on the control boards in some of the subject vehicles were inadequately soldered and could be damaged from heat caused by a large current flow during high-load driving." Whoops.

Toyota says that the worst-case scenario is that the vehicles will either go into a fail-safe mode or the fuse will blow and the vehicle will coast to a stop. In order to fix the problem, Toyota needs to get the required replacement parts and will notify owners by mid-July when and how they can get the vehicles repaired for free. The 2008 Hummer HX concept was supposed to be General Motors' answer to the Jeep Wrangler. To put it mildly, that failed to materialize. General Motors killed Hummer as part of its bankruptcy-induced limb severing in 2009, before the HX could be brought to fruition as the H4, as had been rumored.
For those of you who wish the HX had indeed surfaced, we have some excellent news: My Electric Vehicle, or MEV, has appropriated the HX concept, added an electric drivetrain and created the MEV Hummer HX. The MEV HX is a fully electric golf cart resort vehicle, licensed by GM and sporting Hummer wheels and skid plates.
We're still trying to figure out if the MEV Hummer HX has any practical purpose, which could take some time. While we're doing that, feel free to hop the jump to see a video of the $16,000 electric Hummer knockoff in action.

Honda Ridgeline.

We'll admit it – while it has its virtues, the Honda Ridgeline certainly isn't our first (or second... or third) choice as the best truck currently on sale. Apparently, consumers agree. In fact, Honda only sold 16,142 Ridgelines in 2010, and when you compare that to the fact that General Motors sold 24,642 of the somewhat underwhelming Chevrolet Colorado pickups, the business case for the Ridgeline seems very weak, especially in lieu of the recent death of Honda's other offbeat all-terrain offering, the Element.
According to USA Today, however, the Ridgeline isn't headed for the Great Parking Lot in the Sky just yet. Quite the contrary, actually. American Honda's executive vice president, John Mendel, says the Ridgeline has developed a very strong following over the years, telling USA Today that Honda believes it has "a ways to go on the Ridgeline."
This in mind, we'd expect to see a refreshed version of Honda's truck within the next few years. If Honda is seriously committed to offering the Ridgeline, let's hope the automaker can broaden its appeal to truck shoppers, because if dismal sales numbers continue, Honda may have no choice but to change its tune and reach for the axe.

What they didn’t say: This is a wildly impractical vehicle — a contradiction in terms, for sure, since S.U.V.’s exist supposedly for, well, their utility. But, somewhat surprisingly, this vehicle is so well executed that it is rather compelling, inside and out.

What makes it tick? The optimized 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 has gained 45 horsepower and 45 pound-feet of torque over the previous generation; it now produces 465 horsepower and an equal number of pound-feet of torque. It’ll run from zero to 60 m.p.h. in 4.8 seconds. That’s a bit slower than the outgoing version, but this one has gained about 350 pounds. Fuel efficiency, you ask? Expect mid-teens, when the throttle isn’t being hammered.

How much? How soon? About $45,000 and up, sometime this summer.

How’s it look? Jeep has bestowed this new version with unique exterior and interior touches that give it a really angry persona. The monochrome exterior features a body-colored front grille, wheel flares, rear spoiler and side sill cladding. The lower front grille is closer to the pavement, wider and painted gloss black. The hood has had two snorting air scoops added, like nostrils on a bull, and the rear has sprouted dual exhausts. The whole vehicle has been lowered an inch, and now wears 20-inch wheels and tires.

The top-of-the-line Laramie trim level (available in extended and crew cabs only) comes standard with virtually all of the Sport's features, with a few differences (such as a front split bench seat and two-tone paint) and added luxuries in the form of power-folding exterior mirrors, rear park assist, additional exterior chrome trim, fender flares, power-adjustable pedals, driver memory functions, leather upholstery, a six-way power passenger seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, upgraded audio with subwoofer, remote engine start and wood-grain/chrome interior trim.
Many of the upper trims options can be had on the lower trims. Other notable options (depending on trim level) include an integrated trailer brake controller, a spray-in bedliner, a sunroof, "RamBox" storage bins mounted on the sides of the bed, a rear parking camera, a rear-seat entertainment system and a navigation system with real-time traffic.
There are also a variety of packages available as well. The Outdoorsman (only available on four-wheel-drive trucks) includes highlights such as the 5.7-liter V8 (already standard on the Sport), all-terrain tires, underbody skid plates, limited-slip rear differential, bucket seats with console, two-tone paint and fender flares. The Lone Star (available in Texas only) and Big Horn (available everywhere but Texas) are similar in that they bundle together a bunch of the SLT's optional equipment along with special badging and trim.

GM and Hummer have officially decided to discontinue the Hummer H2 after years of lagging sales and a good deal of negative publicity that the car has brought to GM.
While the car remains popular, the Hummer brand in general, and the H2 specifically, have been on a continual sales slide for the last five years or so. The vehicle, as the most inefficient SUV on the road, has become less appealing since gas prices have more than tripled in the last ten years.
GM has also bemoaned that its “iconic” vehicle has such a negative stigma with a large and growing portion of the population while the world’s largest company, Toyota, has the Prius as its iconic vehicle.
The question is, what vehicle will replace the H2 as GM’s icon in the next 10 years? The bad news is that GM is going to keep selling the car in its current incarnation until 2011 at least, possibly hanging around until 2014. But development on updated H2s, and the planned diesel version, have both been canceled. Hummer will keep making cars, but will concentrate on the smaller H3, and the even smaller upcoming biofueled HX.
HummerGuy.net points out that there have been no set time lines and it’s possible that GM could still change its mind on this one. And while that is certainly true, I just don’t see room for the H2 in the consumer market place any longer. Let’s hope that this focus on efficiency and consumer demand for greener-looking companies will have real effects on vehicle efficiency in the next 10 years.

The clouds of global economic turmoil cast a pall over the opening of the Paris Motor Show on Thursday — although a staged display of thunder and blue lightning bolts provided a dramatic backdrop for the introduction of BMW AG's new 7 series.

General Motors Corp. Chief Operating Officer Fritz Henderson said the U.S. hasn't seen such a slump in auto sales in two decades and predicted "chaos" if U.S. lawmakers don't approve a $700 billion financial bailout plan.

Ford Motor Co.'s CEO for Europe, John Fleming, said he is bracing for a difficult end to 2008 as declining housing markets and tightening credit take their toll.

And Carlos Ghosn, CEO of French carmaker Renault SA, said the global auto industry could remain in a funk for two years.

"We don't know if we are at the start of the end or the end of the start," he told reporters.

With rock music and clouds of dry ice, automakers unveiled smaller and more fuel-efficient cars to cater to consumers both cash-strapped and environmentally conscious. The new models are testimony that the industry is working to adapt to an era of expensive gas and mounting concerns about global warming.

Honda Motor Co. unveiled a new five-door gasoline-electric hatchback to challenge rival Toyota Motor Corp.'s success with the hybrid Prius. Honda said its Insight would be cheaper than any other hybrid car on the market, to make the low-emission technology affordable for more consumers. The Japanese automaker aims to sell 200,000 of the cars each year, launching next spring in Japan, Europe and North America.

Renault showed off a revamped Megane compact hatchback. France's second-largest automaker, which is cutting 6,000 jobs to maintain profitability, hopes the car will make up for poor sales of the low-cost Laguna car.

And luxury car makers like Ferrari added their very own touch of glamor. The Italian automaker introduced its new California — a coupe-cabriolet with a retractable hard top — claiming that customers at the very top end of the market are immune for the moment.

"What is affecting Ferrari customers is not the financial times," CEO Amedeo Felisa said in an interview with The Associated Press.

The displays covered the entire range: fast to slow, luxury to economy. Renault displayed a Formula One racer. Peugeot showed a speedster for the Le Mans Series. Mercedes unveiled its latest armored limousine for VIPs, described as "luxuriously spacious and superbly comfortable."

Underscoring the need for green, some models had the amount of carbon dioxide they emit pasted in large numbers down their sides.

The two-week show opens to the public Saturday after two days for media only.

Citigroup expects 2008 to be the first year of volume declines since 2001 for the global car industry, and last month it lowered its outlook for this year and next after double-digit declines in new car registrations in western Europe, the U.S., and Japan.

Overall U.S. auto sales plunged last month, dropping below 1 million for the first time in more than 15 years as some consumers struggled to get car loans and others stayed away from showrooms amid bank failures and Wall Street turmoil.

Sales at every major U.S. and foreign brand fell at least 24 percent from the previous year, with the exception of GM, which said it sold 16 percent fewer vehicles, helped by its monthlong offer of employee pricing for all buyers.

GM's Henderson said the company can't rule out the need for more restructuring if the economic crisis worsens and said it was "extraordinarily important" that U.S. lawmakers pass a financial bailout to shore up confidence.

France's car market has held up, thanks to government incentives to buyers of green vehicles. The French car manufacturer's association said Wednesday that new car registrations rose 8.4 percent in September from a year earlier.

Last year, France introduced rebates and surcharges to encourage sales of more environmentally friendly vehicles. Under the system, dubbed "bonus-malus," car buyers can take money off the purchase price depending on how much CO2 the vehicle emits. Larger rebates are awarded for cars meeting stricter emissions criteria, from 200 euros ($287) all the way up to 5,000 euros ($7,175) for electric vehicles putting out less than 60 grams of CO2 per kilometer. DUSSELDORF, GERMANY–With the current edition of the Audi A6 into its fourth year, Audi is releasing a revised version of its premium sports sedan that the automaker is dubbing "the new generation" A6.

The cars will arrive in Canada during the first quarter of 2009, with minimal price increases according to Audi brass.

Though Audi wasn't releasing price information, the 2009 A6 3.0T Quattro will replace the current Audi A6 3.2 FSI quattro sedan, which has a base price of $59,900.

Externally, the most apparent change is the incorporation of Audi's trademark row of crystalline LED daytime running lights that trace the lower edge of the headlight cluster. First seen on the R8 and slowly making its way through the lineup, Audi's new bling-thing is a simple, clever and extremely effective visual signature that, along with the Clydesdale-sized horse collar grille, leaves no doubt there's an Audi comin' atcha.

Said grille is set in a smoother fascia, and is flanked by low set, aggressive air intakes that house a single fog lamp. Fine trim strips along the lower flanks lead to a revised derriere with a small lip on the trunk lid, deeper diffuser and fresh LED taillights. New-look aluminum wheels complete the picture.

All in all, a pretty subtle makeover that gives the all-ready sleek A6 a more refined look.

The interior gets a few tweaks too – notably a new brushed aluminum surround in the instrument panel, higher-resolution graphics, more intuitive second-gen MMI (Multi Media Interface), softer seating surfaces and some very fetching optional open-grained wood veneers. Based on the Range Rover Sport, the Kahn version features a twin-turbocharged V8 diesel engine tweaked by powertrain experts, Cosworth. The name refers to the engine's new 300bhp output.

Performance claims include 0-62mph in about eight seconds and a top speed of 135mph.

Cosworth CEO and Managing Director Tim Routsis commented: "over the last three years the engine tuner market has become very important for Cosworth, we have successfully steered our products and services towards high end users. We are confident, that in partnership with Kahn Design, select consumers will be delighted to own distinctively styled cars with Cosworth tuned engines."

Kahn Design has taken influence from some of Cosworth's previous projects, including Fords and Mercedes from the late '80s and early '90s.

Toppers truck.We may be suffering one of the wettest summers in history, but that hasn't stopped VW from creating a one-off version of its Caddy commercial designed to bring sun bathers closer to the sun.

The Caddy Topos Sail design concept will go on display this weekend in Dusseldorf, Germany at the city's Caravan Salon, which is open to the public from 30 August to 7 September.

A new wooden 'sun deck' has been incorporated into the Caddy's roof to mimic the decking employed on expensive classic yachts. Aluminium roof rails complete the look, while the deck is accessed by an integrated ladder in the large rear door.

More wood is used to highlight the side of the Caddy and in the rear bumper.

Another feature of the VW stand in Dusseldorf is the 20th anniversary celebration of the California camper. Although camper versions of VW's Transporter model have been around since the '50s, the California was not actually introduced until 1988.

VW now makes the California model in-house and with more than 80,000 sold to date it is thought to be one of the most successful campers in the world.

Keen trackday regulars and sportscar buyers have a new option in the shape of Jetstream's unusual British-built SC250.

First shown at the Autosport International Show in January, the SC250 is now on sale for the starting price of £29,495 on-the road.

As suggested by the name, the new sportscar packs a considerable 250bhp punch. Power comes from the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine usually found under the bonnet of the Vauxhall Astra VXR, while the prodigious 236lb.ft of torque should make easy work of the SC250's low 700kg kerb weight.

The featherweight construction is thanks to extensive 'virtual engineering' and simulation before a single prototype was built. The SC250 comprises of a composite body with an aluminium monocoque chassis and front and rear steel sub-frames. Side impact protection is afforded by honeycomb side panels.

Jetstream claims respectable performance figures for its new creation, including 0-60mph in less than four seconds and a top speed of 165mph, yet thanks to its low mass, a combined consumption of 38mpg is also quoted. Additionally, the SC250 can run on E85 bio-ethanol for a 10% increase in power.

Based in Cornwall, Jetstream hopes to deliver 50 cars in the next 12 months, with a planned SC300 version, boasting 300bhp, due in 2009. Pickup truck toppers.
